Setting Up Your Mobile Farrier Shop
How to outfit your truck and trailer for maximum efficiency. Covers vehicle selection, forge setup, tool organization, and inventory management.
Vehicle Selection
A 3/4-ton or 1-ton truck is the standard. Diesel offers better towing capacity and fuel economy under load. Consider a flatbed or service body for easier tool access. Many farriers prefer a dedicated farrier body from companies like Southern Cross or Frontier.
Forge Mounting
Mount your gas forge on a swing-out arm or a pull-out drawer for easy access. Keep it away from your shoe stock and other flammables. A propane forge is the most common choice for mobile work. NC Whisper and Majestic are popular models.
Tool Organization
Use magnetic strips, PVC pipe holders, and purpose-built racks to keep tools organized and accessible. The 30 seconds you save finding the right tool adds up to hours over a week. Label everything.
Shoe and Nail Inventory
Carry a range of sizes in your most-used shoe styles. Track inventory weekly and reorder before you run out. A missed appointment because you ran out of size 1 shoes costs you more than the shoes themselves.
Power and Lighting
A small generator or inverter powers your grinder and lights. LED work lights on magnetic bases are useful for dark barns. Keep a headlamp as backup.
Safety Equipment
Keep a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and eye wash station in your rig. Wear safety glasses when grinding. Leather aprons protect your legs. Non-negotiable.
