Farrier Tool Maintenance and Care
How to keep your nippers, knives, rasps, and forge tools in peak condition. Includes sharpening schedules, storage tips, and replacement intervals.
Hoof Knife Sharpening
Sharpen your hoof knife after every 3-4 horses. Use a fine-grit stone and maintain the original bevel angle. A sharp knife is safer and more efficient than a dull one. Keep a spare blade in your apron pocket.
Nipper Maintenance
Clean and oil nippers after each use. Have them professionally sharpened every 6-8 weeks. Replace them when the jaws no longer close cleanly or when the cutting edge chips repeatedly.
Rasp Care
A new rasp cuts aggressively and becomes smoother with use. Most farriers rotate through a rasp every 10-15 horses. Keep old rasps for finish work and use new rasps for initial leveling.
Forge and Anvil
Keep your anvil face clean and free of scale. Use a wire brush between heats. Check your forge fuel lines monthly. Store your forge covered and off the ground when not in use.
Tool Storage
Keep tools dry. Moisture causes rust. Store them in a ventilated toolbox with silica gel packets. Oil metal surfaces before long-term storage. A well-maintained set of tools lasts years longer than a neglected one.
