Is Farriery Right for You?

Farriery is physically demanding, weather-dependent, and requires years of practice to master. It also offers independence, good pay, and the satisfaction of keeping horses sound. Be honest about your physical fitness and tolerance for outdoor work.

Farrier Schools

Formal programs range from 8-week intensives to 2-year programs. Well-known schools include Heartland Horseshoeing School, Oklahoma Farrier's College, and Meredith Manor. Expect to spend $5,000-$15,000 on tuition.

Finding an Apprenticeship

After (or instead of) school, apprentice with an experienced farrier for 1-3 years. Look for someone who does the type of work you want to do. Ask your state farrier association for recommendations.

AFA Certification Path

The American Farrier Association offers three levels: Intern, Certified Farrier (CF), and Certified Journeyman Farrier (CJF). Each requires passing both written and practical exams. Certification is not legally required but significantly boosts credibility.

Building Skills Progressively

Start with trim-only work and basic shoes. Add complexity as your skills grow. Do not attempt corrective or therapeutic work until you have solid foundational skills and mentorship.

Investing in Tools

A starter kit costs $1,500-$3,000. Buy quality tools from the beginning. Cheap tools cost more in the long run through frequent replacement and poor results.
